The Mayan languages form a vibrant linguistic family spoken throughout Central America, primarily in Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, and Honduras. These languages descend from a common ancestor, Proto-Mayan, spoken over 4,000 years ago. The rich history of this language family is intrinsically linked to the rise and fall of the ancient Mayan civilization.

Though many Mayan languages thrive with millions of speakers, others are endangered with dwindling numbers. Unesco lists several Mayan languages as vulnerable or endangered. Efforts are underway to revitalize these languages and preserve this linguistic heritage.
